It's interesting how XCOM and Phoenix Point have almost entirely different views of the human race by default. Synedrion believes it was shortsighted human arrogance that led to everyone's downfall. Jericho blames international strife, racism, and classism for the destruction of humanity. The Anu believe the sin humanity has tainted itself with, and must atone for via controlled mutation, is making war against itself. This tinge of the pandoravirus being on the fuzzy edge of human understanding where it's not quite understood but there's this clear undertone that it can be understood is almost certainly deliberate.Į: as more evidence of my assertion that humanity would have won if we hadn't been shortsighted, look at everything said by the three factions. Making the virus explicitly "supernatural" would sabotage this.

This isn't a cosmic horror story, it's a story of man overcoming the unknown via faith (Anu), rationality (Synedrion), and hard work (Jericho). The aliens can be understood, countered, and defeated. The point is implicitly that there is nothing about the virus which defies actual understanding-it is just so alien that it seems to. Oh shit, this means things are going super bad? Well, we're rich, let's just abandon all the poors to become mutant monsters because lol fuck the poor.Īnd even then they believe they have almost figured out enough to start making some headway. Phoenix is trying to stop that? Well, why don't we claim that this is Mother Nature's Will and terror-bomb their scientists to make sure nobody can find a way to mitigate it. 40 years later, they get proven to be correct in retrospect? We could either admit wrongdoing-or we could blame the other guy and point nukes at him, despite the fact that any country capable of engineering something like the Mist would have biotech beyond any human understanding. Records indicate that there's an existential threat to human life? Better whine that the guys trying to prevent an outbreak are using Commie intel and therefore need to have their funding cut. One of the things that keeps coming up in the background is that the Phoenix Project could have won and the apocalypse would not have happened if it wasn't for humans being stupid and shortsighted about it. Except the Lovecraftian unknowability is set to the current level, not higher or lower, for a reason.
